Friday 13th March, 2015

Not sure why I say this, but I just have a feeling you’ve been a bit distracted this week.  Could it have been the racing at Cheltenham??  It has been a bit quiet on the research front however with all the excitement and AP McCoy’s looming retirement I will concede that even I have had a problem concentrating on the day job.  Jimmy contacted me three times with requests for tips. This is not the way to supplement your allowance I told her repeatedly, ever the responsible father, and urging her only to bet what she could afford to lose.  And lose she would have done if she had listened to me though she insisted it was a friend who was asking.  If only I practised what I preach.   And then, a couple of minutes after the Gold Cup had started,  she tells me to put an each way bet on Road to Riches which indeed came in third.  Typical.  Lack of concentration seems to be a family trait.  Got a Whatsappfrom Hen this morning telling me she has a bad bruise on her hand and winded herself when she walked into a tree on her way home last night whilst,  as she put it, “perving at a boy on the other side of the road”.

Now, I don’t know about you, but I like coincidences so for want of anything else to tell you here’s a rum one.  I have a little game I play with youngest child Lottie, aka as PerseUpperself.  Most evenings when I get home and she is settling down to her homework  I ask her what new word she learnt that day.  Great game eh?!  But she likes words and so do I actually so it’s fun as well as educational.  For example this week we have had “ubiquitous” and “verbosity”.  Ah it’s a marvellous thing the Cambridge education.  Anyway, on Wednesday evening when I asked her as she was heading out the kitchen up to her room what her word of the day was she paused uncharacteristically.  “ Oh well ”, I called after her, showing off,  “ Let me know if you have an epiphany.”  With that her head popped back round the door, surprise written all over her face.  Yup.  Epiphany was the very word she had learnt earlier that day in a Biology class of all places.  What are the chances of that eh?  I know I know, all a bit dull this week but you need to understand it’s not all about moles, squirrels and Canada Geese at our pad.

Anyway, going back to the betting, just last week I was writing that something desperate needed to happen.  Bob’s investment in ITM Power, which had shown such promise early on, was looking precarious.  Yesterday JCB rode to the “rescue” in the form of a private placement taking a 7% stake at a small premium.  Hurrah for that at least.
