7th November, 2008

That horse I tipped last week.......well it just went and won didn't it! You beauty. The trouble with that ( and I also got the Melbourne Cup winner in the office sweepstake btw ) is two-fold. The pressure to repeat this success is intense. The reality, whilst I would like to think I have discovered some wonderful innate apptitude for selecting winners, tips from the trainer don't come by every day. The other thing that unsettles me is I seem to be using up all my luck too quickly and frankly, without anything meaningful to show for it. To put this in context I'll always remember a secretary at BAM in HK, Kitty Yip, who came in to the office one Monday morning with a glum look on her face. Turned out that over the weekend she had won the equivalent of £100,000 in the Mark 6. She explained to me she was depressed because it wasn't going to change her life. Sympathy for her?? I don't have much really. Here am I worrying I've used up all my luck for £25 on the Melbourne Cup and not a whole lot more last Saturday.

Not in a particularly good mood this afternoon I have to say. As so often this is the result of Hen-antics. You may recall she once went back to school leaving her entire uniform behind and had to survive in borrowed clothes for three weeks. In a similar vein, bearing in mind Photography is one of just a very few subjects she has to think about these days, what should she forget at home after half term, but her camera ( and a roll of film which she seemed particularly eager to recover and which I was sorely tempted to have developed ). Drives you mad. I took pity on her this time and worked out a cunning plan to re-unite her with said crucial bit of equipment, upon discovering that she was coming down to London on an art trip. This involved cutting short lunch today and trekking across that fancy bridge over the Thames to meet her at Tate Modern only to find that she had given me the wrong Tate and was in fact at the Britain. Dull dull dull.
