As issues such as deflationary forces and impending war seem to preoccupy us these days, I thought you might be interested if not amused by this brief discourse, evidencing inflationary pressures do exist and that at least some people have got their priorities in order.
Outrage at the Royal & Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews. The price of a bowl of soup in the members dining room which should have risen by 3%, according to a Club Committee decision, went up from £2 to £2.50 last week. It had in already risen from £1.20 to £2 in the past year. Regular users of the Club, including my father, rose in revolt and wrote in the Suggestions Book - prompting the following reply from the Members Secretary.
Dear Ian
It has been suggested that depth of soup in bowl is reduced in staged reductions
over the weekend so as to achieve full 50% profitability by lunchtime Monday.
Reduced price can then be charged. In order to prevent any immediate suspicion by
purchaser, suggest waiting staff instructed to put thumb in soup when presenting same
to the table.
Yours sincerely etc.
Members' Secretary
