Friday 15th November, 2013

Happy to report it would seem Rugby’s wildlife has been left in peace this week though I must admit I have had little contact with Bob due to the fact that he only got round to collecting his computer from the IT department the day before his housemaster implemented a block on all forms of mobile communication for 36 hours at the end of this week. Laptops, phones, etc were confiscated.  Incidentally, slightly changing the subject, I got a fairly terse reply from Bob’s housemaster who I was warned by Bob wanted to speak to me about the squirrel incident.  I pre-empted a conversation with an email telling him that I would be having words with Bob to stress to him that there should be no repeat of his culinary escapade , but,  “Nevertheless”,  I wrote, “I might add I do think it suggests your kitchen staff need to brush up their act”.  Different sense of humour prob.

Anyway, although Bob, as you might imagine, isn’t generally preoccupied with his phone when wandering down the street or eating his supper, I thought taking their phones away was a rather good idea and furthermore they used it as an opportunity to raise money for charity with the boys encouraged to write a begging letter home. We did get one from him, the first in nearly three years that he's been away, but it felt that like he hadn't really grasped the point Mr Price was trying to make.  He told us that there was going to be an “electricity ban” so he might as well wait till after leave out before reuniting himself with his lap-top.  Yes, it’s a leave out weekend and as I write Sophie is driving him home and tells me he is wearing a silk shirt.  It’s these little details isn’t it.  The boy is an enigma.

Oh, yup, meant to tell you that there has been a development on the GAP year front.  There are crises all over the world and good causes and charities desperate for educated and energetic young people with time on their hands to come and help.  So Jimmy is off to St Lucia to lie on a beach for a month and a half.  There’s a girl with a social conscience.
