Friday 22nd November, 2013

Last word on Bob, at least as far as recent misdemeanours are concerned.  It is obviously just a phase he’s going through.  Spurred into action after receiving an email from his house-master ( see below )  I have now implemented a daily WhatsApp exchange with Bob just before prep time in which I get him to tell me what he’s been up to during the day to help focus his mind on the job at hand and he seems to be responding positively to that.  Yesterday he mentioned that he had had to fill in a careers advice sheet.  “Interesting??” I enquired.

Xx nah not really just asked what subjects I do and like and asked if I was black or asian. I said I was other white because there was no Swedish for me to tick!

Random.  Anyway this was (an extract from) the HM’s email:

“I had a long old chat with Bob last night. It has not been a great few days and although we can dissect individual things and find reasons/excuses, Bob admits that the accumulation/juxtaposition of incidents is not ideal.

Squirrel-gate
Geography imposition
Detention in English for late coursework
Sent back from OBS social for over-exuberance
Almost sent off in Rugby on Saturday for over-zealous defence of a team-mate
Friday prep, told off by Mr Baker, then found fooling around in goggles...
Charging off to chase  fox in a Rugby practice.

It's harmless stuff really, BUT I am trying to get Bob to focus on priorities and to think before he acts.”

OMG.  If he starts thinking before he acts we really could be in trouble.

Talking about thinking, I’ve been hatching a plan.  Before you get too excited it appears it might be scuppered at the outset by Health and Safety vigilantes, but as you may know I’m off to Tokyo at the end of next week for the Nomura Investment Forum.  194 Japanese and 35 Asian companies have confirmed their attendance along with various honourable keynote speakers including Mr Akira Amari, Minister in charge of Economic Revitalisation and Mr Naoyuki Okamoto, Deputy Director General, Ministry of Finance.  And, get this, Lord Sebastian Coe.  How about that?!  Of course the rationale is that with Tokyo having successfully bid for the Olympic Games it will be interesting to hear him talk about lessons and issues given his experience as  past Chairman of the British Olympic Association.

But to me that was a side show.  The thing about Seb Coe is that he set a world record of 1min 41.73 secs for the 800 metres in 1981 which remained unbroken till 1997.  You might remember that for quite a few years now I have variously staged my own attempts at breaking a world record in the 800m.  It was one set in 1922, in Paris, by a lady called Georgette Lenoir.  The time she achieved was 2 mins 30 seconds.  Given the age, I imagine her sprinting round a track in bloomers and a corset , but to date I havn’t really come close to her time.  So…….and here’s what I’m thinking……what if I can persuade my NBF Seb to go for a run with me round the Imperial Palace.  Measure out 800m and then get him to act as my pace maker for a concerted attempt to nail Georgette’s record.  Clever eh?

Health and safety issues aside he seems a sport and I have a good feeling about this.    Nevertheless keen to hear from you if you have any ideas on how I go about selling the idea to him as I think it all depends on that.  So drop me a line!
